Material Design is for Google only

The way people talk about Material Design makes it feel as through it’s a new discovery in design. There are interesting principles in there, but I don’t see why another company would want to adopt Google’s design guidelines. Outside of Google I don’t think it’s a huge thing, and I don’t really think about it very much to be honest.
